E5 Thermal Imaging Camera with MSX
The new FLIR E5 thermal camera is designed to enhance the electrical, mechanical and building diagnostics of users across key industries and professions. The FLIR E5 is an affordable solution that can help professional users track down electrical and mechanical overheating, air leaks, moisture ingress, missing insulation, and a host of other issues that thermal imagers can detect and quantify.
Other Features
Featuring a 10,800 (120 x 90) pixel IR resolution, a 20 degrees C to 250 degrees C temperature range, and ±2 percent or 2 degrees C accuracy, the FLIR E5 features a compact, rugged and user-friendly design, a vivid 3-inch color LCD display, wide-angle autofocus lens, intuitive camera controls, and an on-board 640 x 480-pixel digital camera.
MSX Imaging Technology
The E5 also provides FLIR’s exclusive MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) technology, which uses visible details from digital camera photos to create sharper IR images. Along with delivering a much clearer thermal picture overall, MSX makes it much easier to recognize the location of heat issues without obscuring or compromising the integrity of the original thermal scene. MSX is ideal for creating an all-in-one thermal image that clearly illustrates the location of emerging or existing issues, and the bundled FLIR Tools software makes it simple to import, analyze, and incorporate images into easy-to-understand reports to help provide convincing evidence for repairs.
What’s in the Box
Li-Ion rechargeable battery, power supply, USB cable, hard case, and FLIR Tools software for PC and Mac OS, and user manual.
Warranty
The new FLIR E5 is covered under an industry-leading 10-5-2 warranty, which provides an extended 10-year warranty on the IR detector, 5 years’ protection on field-replaceable batteries, and 2 years’ of coverage on parts and labor.

This camera allowed me to learn everything everyone should know about their homes, fix issues, save money, and understand itI can’t walk on water, but now I can see it through walls. After pipe burst and flooded basement, I’ve dealt and hemorrhaged so much money with contractors who used this as a selling tool for their services, and didn’t offer solutions just identified problems. The pipe burst was invisible for a long time in finished basement due to vapor barriers etc. At first all the insurance agreed to cover was removal of 2 feets of the bottom drywall (i.e., NEVER use drywall in basement – it covers what you need to see and can and usually does become a home for mold colonies on the side not visible to eye). There was black mold on the inside of the drywall top to bottom, in duct-work (it doesn’t grow on metal, but on organic dust in the ductwork when water is introduced), in drywalled ceiling due to traveling water. Water is tricky and evasive and can and will go anywhere it can. All of it was invisible and there was no hint of any problem in the finished basement. My daughters and I were sick, headaches, extreme fatigue, vertigo, constant upper respiratory problems, coughing, collapsed lungs, inflamed eustation tubes – our medical bills sky rocked all with seemingly no explanation. When the mold was found, and stachybotrys spores were found in air quality testing – I started researching. All I really knew about mold was to throw out food if it got moldy. I had not idea how ill it can make people, and I wonder how many people are sick, misdiagnosed, and continue to suffer. Not one doctor, even at the Mayo Clinic asked if there was any possibility there was mold in the house and/or circulating through HVAC and ductwork. Another subject, but I’m now studying Medical Mycology at a masters level.Anyway, decided to take matter into my own hands. Yes, this is expensive, but SO WORTH IT. I was able to track the water’s path along and in duct-work, across studs, found area where my sump basket was blocked due to crumbling concrete below the burst pipe. It’s also helpful in tracking heat loss in ducts that I easily sealed – you can see yellow streaks were the heat is leaking out (again, do not enclose ceiling of basement with drywall – learned the hardway you need to see and access everything). I can locate ducts behind the drywall on all the other floors and see if there is leakage. Dark purple indicates water or frost. Also you can see where cold air is coming in or warm air escaping. The camera works well outdoors and you can see areas of your roof that are not well insulated.Something I learned and didn’t realize in living through this horror, was that having some or limited draft coming into or out of house is not bad. Fresh air is coming in and houses need to breath to stay healthy – insulate well, but don’t seal your house too tight, it only leads to problems. Some air coming in around doors is actually a good thing.Long dissertation, sorry. But having learned the hard way, my advice is to get this camera or one like it and get to know your house inside and out. Check bathrooms – find out if water getting behind tile (if it is, you have a mold problem).

WOW! an Amazing/Expensive Toyi recently purchased this for use with NAS SERVERS, to see what drives are hot and what areas are not getting sufficient cooling. I do love this thing, I was looking at the E4 model….and for a few hundred bucks you can get higher resolution and Auto hot/cold detection feature. This camera comes in a very…I mean EXTREMELY high quality case, like a pelican case or something. The battery life for this camera last quite long (4 hours on high screen brightness and 5-6 on low brightness), and has a removable battery so extras can be purchased for longer operation. First time operation of this camera was very easy and simple. it takes no longer than 5 seconds to power up and only 2 seconds max to power up when on idle. It has a very simple button layout, and wearing gloves with this is a breeze. There are multiple modes this camera has. It has a standard 640×480 color camera and 120×90 thermal imaging camera. I was also looking at the I series cameras by Flir, which cost a lot for just having a thermal camera but with the E5, having the MSX technology makes a world of difference! having the overlapping camera pictures makes defining whats in front of you much easier. now talking about the feel of the camera, i have to say it feels very comfortable in the hand….especially for long work hours, having a comfortable grip makes the job that much easier. I did in mind purchase this as a work tool, but i found myself playing with this more like a Toy than a work tool. Going around my house, looking at all the power hungry tech laying around, and finding missing insulation in the walls. Overall, this a great gadget to have! and is worth the money!UPDATE: 10/08/2017I looked around on a bunch of forums that said that no matter what version of camera you buy, its all the same inside but limited by the software. I managed to hack this camera with the special edition software and got the full E8 specs out of my E5. I bet this is against warranty and if you mess up the processes, you could brick the camera for ever. Now all the new cameras that are being sold by FLIR have the new software patch that will not let you do this hack. But it is still amazing to save a few grand just by typing some new code. lol still a great buy and very robust!

Cool toy for the MoneyI bought this for my small plumbing company to help diagnose certain problems relating to water. So far it has just been a cool toy to play with and impress customers with. Seeing as it only really see’s heat well, looking for things like cold water leaks in walls and floors doesn’t really work, but it has been good for finding evidence of older leaks that home sellers have tried to hide with stain cover paint. I have also used it to find frozen sections of heating pipes. It see’s hot water lines pretty well, as long as they are right behind a wall and un-insulated pipes. If the pipes are deep in the wall, or insulated, than you can’t see anything.Great tool for an HVAC guy or light contractor like myself, but if your a home inspector you should consider a more powerful model.Update….After some more practice with the tool looking at known leaks I can now identify them a little better with experience of knowing what to look for. Its still no magic bullet, but helps zero in on the source of leaks by looking at the saturation levels in ceilings. I think this type of tool has its limitations, but its usefulness is determined in part by the experience level of the user in knowing what to look for as its not always obvious.
