Install is not easyAfter our small microwave gave out, I bought this Panasonic Inverter Microwave on sale at a big box store. The challenge was to find the stainless steel trim piece online. The model numbers were not exactly the same from one site to the next. I was concerned that it might not match the trim piece around the oven below and/or the space around the microwave would be too large. I was surprised to discover the trim piece cost more than the microwave itself. It took my husband 4 hours to install. The cabinet opening had to be enlarged which took most of the time. That part of the install is critical. It’s very important that the opening is the correct size in order for the clips to fasten correctly. Would be nice if the fasteners were adjustable to retrofit the cabinet, but they’re not – (something for the manufacturer to think about). All in all, I think it turned out great. The stainless steel is a good match and the gap is minimal. The vents are necessary because the microwave puts out more heat than our old microwave did.HELPFUL HINT: Layout your microwave and all the parts of the trim kit on your counter, as if you are putting it together… like a practice trial run. It will help you understand how it all fits together. Especially when you’re working in the small cut out in the wall, while on a step stool. A special thanks to my husband — thank you sweetheart, it looks great.

Ok.So, it arrived with no instructions. Once found, I put it all together and there was a 0.5 inch gap on both sides and the bottom of the microwave. This was the trim kit that Panasonic recommended for the model I bought. I fixed it by pounding the inside edges with a hammer on the sides and bending them inward. If you’re careful, it’s not too hard to do. So now the sides don’t have a gaping chasm. As for the top/bottom, it needs a little space to open the door on the top and I don’t mind a little gap at the bottom for venting anyway. Also the mounting system is only useful to f you’re cutting your entire cabinet to fit it perfectly. It mounts to the shelf above and below the microwave. So if you didn’t measure your cabinet to fit it perfectly, the mount is useless.I’d read others having similar problems and using screw in magnets in each corner to fix it. This is the solution I’ll end up going with as well. So, it’s functional. Not nearly worth the price though, considering how much alteration I had to do.

Cabinet dimensions wrong ? Try magnets. This isn’t a bad looking microwave trim kit but a lot of complaints on how precise the cutout needs to be for this trim. I had the same problem but solved it with some strong ‘coin’ magnets, precisely cut 3/8” slices of 1” hardwood dowel and a bit of careful measurement (see pictures). Could also be achieved with any 3/8” spacers that’s roughly 1” diameter as long as you can screw them on from the backside. The idea is – place dowels with magnets where the center of the hole in the trim bracket would otherwise be and use the magnet to clamp onto frame of the trim where the plastic parts would normally go.Amazon has the magnets- buy Mikede 1.26 inch D x 1/8 inch H. They are amazing strong (don’t let them pinch you). Carefully measure where to drill a hole in your cabinet to attach the dowel slices and pre-drill them in the center and attach with screws from the back that don’t poke through the front. Check fit with magnets stuck to trim and if it’s all good, then remove magnets from trim and attach to dowel using super thin layer of contact cement or epoxy. Also note- my cabinet opening was too tight for the duct attachment so had to also trim out a small 1/4”x 6-1/2” piece to make clearance. Your situation may vary so adjust as needed.

Good trim kitGood trim kit that’s pretty easy to install and directions are pretty simple to follow.

  8. Alex Martinez

It worksWish the warranty/return was better. Size was off ,but the trim (breather) that goes on the microwave is so thin the caps broke after folding. Would’ve cost me more to send back.

Becareful with the actual surround! The mounting brackets are study and the plastic clips inserted into the mounting brackets “float” this allows for easier installation. The issue I encountered was I installed the mounting brackets and plastic clips, lined up the bottom and clips worked as designed. I then lined up the top and pressed into place. Everything seemed fine. Then the actual surround fell off and hit me in the leg and since the edges are sharp caused a pretty nasty cut on my leg. My leg prevented any damage to the surround from hitting the floor. When I quit bleeding I looked over and the issue was the plastic inserts float, and by aligning the bottom first, the top inserts were at the bottom and the actual surround “Pins” were at the bottom and the clips missed the actual plastic hold down points. Which caused the top too lock into place and fall. I then installed the top first and was able to move the surround to line up the bottom pins.Once installed it is fine.Attached Pic for a reference.

a nightmare to installa little bit taller than i thought it needs to be – 2 rows of air vents would work as well and make it look less bulky / dominant. Space between microwave and enclosure could be a little bit smaller too – my recommendation – works and saves you money over built-in microwaves – but close the door during installation, so you don’t hear the installer @&$%$*#
