Product Description

Tormek sog-250 grindstone

From the Manufacturer

Tormek SG-250 Grindstone is used on the T-7 model. The Tormek Original Grindstone has evolved over the years to offer the best combination of efficient steel removal, smooth surface finish and a long life. This stone efficiently cuts all types of tools and steel qualities including HSS. The unique composition of the stone, together with the Stone Grader SP-650 gives you two different cutting actions in one stone. The Stone grader polishes the surface of the grindstone from its normal 220 grit to a finish that works like a 1000 grit stone. This is a great advantage, since you can do the fine sharpening with the same setting of the jig as used for the initial shaping of the tool. The Original Grindstone is the ideal choice when you want both efficient steel removal and fine finish in the same stone over a wide variety of materials, from carbon steel to high speed steel.

Replace woth what came with itI bought my Tormek over 20 years ago and used up the original stone. I was always happy with it’s performance so, when people started raving about CBN wheels, I hesitated on which to buy.I ended up going with what the machine was designed for. I restore a lot of antique Stanley planes and I use the side of the stone to flatten the back of old blades. The narrowness of CBN stones didn’t appeal to me so I ended up simy buying a replacement stone. The water aspect of the stone doesn’t bother ne as I hone my edges with 6000 and 12000 grit waterstones anyway.

It does the job. This is my fourth Tormek SG-250, which is the stone that came with my Tormek system originally. Its best feature is its ability to change grits through application of a coarse or fine whetstone (sold separately) so you can do fast grinding, as with a chipped chisel, or fine grinding, as on most cutlery. The stone is perfectly round from the start and gets right to work. I sharpen professionally and am very happy with this stone.

Inconsistent quality!I buy about 3-4 per year. I’m a knife sharpening professional. When I get these that are softer on one side they get out of round fast. When you “true” you loose stone fast. About 1/4″total smaller each truing. These defective stones last about 1/2 as long. I’ve contacted Tormek once but they reply ” it’s operator error”. Really? How do you make them go out of round so fast by error. perhaps its customer service Error!About 1/2 the stones are perfect 1/2 suck!

  5. Charles Osborne

New wheelI bought this wheel to replace the old one on my tormek. The origional was not worn out but had rusted to the shaft and could not be removed. I ended up installing a new stainless steel shaft with quick release and a new wheel. The conversion was easy and allowed me to use a fine stone to polish a smooth edge. My stone required a light dressing with the diamond trueing tool to make the stone perfectly round.
